Hazzan David Propis
Born in Canada, Hazzan David Propis learned the cantorial art at the feet of his father, Hazzan Dov Propis, and studied voice with Metropolitan Opera diva Elena Nikolaidi. His ability to seamlessly blend popular and cantorial music has given him the opportunity to share the stage with such luminaries as Dave Brubeck, Julie Budd, Jackie Mason and Yaakov Smirnoff, and he has appeared frequently in major venues in the U.S., Europe and Israel.
Hazzan Propis continuously entertains for both Jewish and non-Jewish organizations and is in constant demand by his beloved Houston Astros and Rockets for his powerful rendition of the Star Spangled Banner. He also had the pleasure of singing with the Polish National Symphony Orchestra and was featured in the documentary 100 Voices: A Journey Home, a feature film shown in theaters all over the country. New York Times columnist Allan Kozin called Hazzan Propis’s performance at Carnegie Hall “stunning…ebullient.”
David produced numerous faith-based recordings, including the 11-disc “Spirit Series” for the Cantors Assembly and United Synagogue, which have been distributed to millions of homes throughout North America and raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for these organizations. He also is the founder, creative director, and managing partner of “The 3 Jewish Tenors,” a symphonic musical event with budgets in excess of $100,000. Over 24 of these mega concert events have raised millions of dollars for synagogues and Jewish organizations.
David has recorded over a dozen albums, including his latest, “Together as One,” a duet compilation with Hazzan Alisa Pomerantz-Boro. This recording joins “Visions of Shabbat” and “Visions in Prayer,” both composed and arranged by Meir Finkelstein, as well as “The 3 Jewish Tenors – LIVE!” and the Yiddish CD “Inspirations – Memories of Home.” Among his many honors, David is the immediate past president of the Cantors Assembly, the largest body of cantors in the world.
David and his wife Karen Siegel have two beautiful children, Dena and Sam.
